MS Pub 97 would not close

Recently I noticed a strange behavior of my MS Pub 97, it would not close.
In fact, when I click Close or Exit in File menu, the publication or
application closes, I cannot see it anywhere. However, when I try to reopen
publication, I'm getting error message saying that this publication is still
open... The only way to "close" it is to reboot computer.
What's going on? How to fix it? In the past, for many years, there was no
such problem.

Might try a re-install. Does this happen in safe mode? Have you changed printers
lately? Do you have a default printer selected? Can you close Publisher in the
Task Manager (ctrl+alt+delete)?
Do you get an error?

What version of Windows are you using? If you are using XP, try using Publisher
in a compatibility mode. My 97 works fine in the 98 mode.

Mary,
just run compatibility and it works fine in 98 mode. However, I set 256
colors and now everything looks ugly... Do you think I can go back to True
Colors?

One more report...
Unchecked 256 colors and got the old error back... Checked Disable Themes -
same error...
So, the question is, is there a way to set 256 colors in Pub only?

I don't think you can.

Is your video/graphics driver current? I don't have any of the display options
checked and I am not having your issues. Could be the video driver.

Slide the acceleration down on your adapter, do you still get the error?
Control panel, display folder, settings tab, advanced button, troubleshoot tab.

Mary,
even before I read your last message, the Pub came back to senses somehow...
Sure, I tried this and that, but at the end restored all the settings.
Turned off, turned on, and it worked... Another mystery of computing...
Thanks a lot for your assistance. It's nice to have you here for soooo long!
Happy New Year to you!

Ilyaz, What did you try? Might help someone in the future.

I'm happy you are up and running, Publisher 97 was the best version until 2003.

Well, I'm not sure if it can help, but here's what I did. First, I run
compatibility mode, set for Win 98, and 256 colors. Got Pub work, but
screwed all the colors... Went back, run compatibility with Win 98, but
unchecked 256 and checked the themes. Got errors again. Went back, set 98
but unchecked all options. Got error again. Turned off, reboot, run Pub and
it worked...

I have respectfully disagree with you about 2003. I still prefer 97, if
for just one reason: it keeps the endnotes! And I have hundreds of them in
my genealogy books! Do you or anyone knows, why MS dropped this function
from Pub? There must be some reason for abandoning it.
Thanks again for your help!
Ilya
