I need a method of putting the name of the current user in a wrod form, and
once this has been done securing the filed so that it cannot be updated.

You need to ask this in a word.vba newsgroup, since it would certainly require
a macro. Be sure to include the version of Windows and of Word in your
question, and whether you expect to pick up the user from the Windows login,or
the information within the Word environment (Tools/Options/User info).
