MSProject Application Crash when Saving Master Project w 2 subprojects

Using MS Project Pro, I have a master project and two subprojects to allow
future schedule builders to independently edit the subprojects.
I use a fourth project strictly to hold the pooled shared resources for the
Master and two subprojects.

I am getting crashes (MS Project has encountered a problem and needs to
close. Please tell Microsoft about this problem...) which lose my edits, when
I do a save of the master project and I suspect it's a result of my careless
editing. Usually I will edit tasks in the subproject from within the master
project and when I save the master it always asks if I want to save the
subprojects too, which I do. However, if I need to edit a custom field
containing a formula in the subproject I must go to the subproject because
those formulas are peculiar to the subproject; then I will save just the
subproject to protect the formula edits. Since I am still in the setup phase
of this project schedule I make frequent edits to both the master and each
subproject with all three project files open and the resource file (usually
opened as read-only).

Does it matter whether the subprojects are open when making edits to the
master project in the area of the subproject tasks, or whether I edit the
subproject files while the master is open?

Some times this happens if only the Master and the Resource files are open.
Another manifestation is it will sometimes hang waiting for the other file to
finish some operation, and a dialog box allows you to Switch to the other
application or Retry, neither of which work, and it continues to hang until
one kills the application in the task manager.

Is there some discipline I should observe when doing edits?

Thanks,
