Multiple computers, IMAP, Entourage and my own domain

Perhaps I don't really understand IMAP. I have my own domain with
multiple e-mail addresses. I've set them up as IMAP accounts believing
that this configuration would allow me check e-mail using the web (G-
Mail or other web based like Horde) as well as Entourage 2004 from any
computer while still being able to see them on another. For instance,
checking using my laptop and being able to see it again on my desktop
computer.

I've set up my Entourage accounts as IMAP on my hosting companies
server. I've set G-mail to "leave a copy on the server" for each of
the addresses I've added, and written new rules in Entourage for the
IMAP accounts.

For some reason, some messages do not show on alternate computers in
Entourage and G-mail says it does not support IMAP but it's not clear
to me in what ways.

Additionally I have had problems with Rules in the past using POP
accounts and perhaps now with the IMAP as well. The same rules
(literally) copied from one Main Identity to another computer may not
be working on the first but will work on the second! I've tried
reinstalling, rebuilding but...

Thanks to all for whatever insight you can share.

Webmail is a different thing independent from IMAP. It has to be enabled
on the server.

G-Mail?? Are you talking about Google Mail? I don't believe they offer
IMAP. Only POP.

What happens is that e-mails remain on gMail no matter what. They are
downloadable through POP, but once they have been downloaded from one
computer, they don't appear as available from the other one.
What you really need is indeed IMAP.
With an IMAP account, e-mails are accessible from any computer and their
status (read, deleted...) syncs through the server as well. gMail simply
does not offer that.

Not really.... Unless you accesseed the groups from a web-server
(instead of the news server) that would support that and send you
notifications. I don't know any server that would do that.

Corentin,

Many thanks for your explanation. I think I have a better
understanding now.

You were correct, Gmail=google mail and yes, POP only.

Other than the Horde and Squirrel Mail provided by my domain host, can
you (or anyone reading) recommend a well featured IMAP web mail?

Thanks,

Jonathan

Yeah, it's sad for such a good service :) (though I suspect IMAP would
put a huge load on their servers and make the whole thing impossible).

:-\

I have a domain name with 1and1.com. Not too expensive and it comes with
5 pretty decent IMAP accounts that are also accessible through WebMail.

You might want to take a look.

There are many many other options out there, but I just haven't really
investigated them.

The free ones usually come with limited options (eg: no IMAP) and
advertisement all over the place :-(
