my default document theme does not open in new documents

I have opened a new document in Word in print layout and set a default theme.
It will not open to the default in new documents. I set the theme also in
Outlook and it opens fine. I tried setting a background default and that does
not work either. I want a blue background and white lettering in Word. Trying
to use the Blue Calm theme.
