My documents are opening in Wordpad instead of MS word. Why?

My documents are opening in Wordpad instead of MS Word. Other documents like
powerpoint files are also not opening automatically and I have to choose the
program with which I should open them. Why is windows not recognizing the
default programs? I will be grateful for any help. Thanks a lot

I suggest running Detect and Repair under Help in the Office application.
