My mail recipients cannot open Word documents sent as attachments.

Too many of my mail recipients say that they cannot open my Word files sent
as attachments or jpg files that I may send. They say that they arrive as
WIN DAT files and they can't open or read them. Why? I'm using Office XP
SP3 and the Word version is Word 2002.

The attachments are arriving as winmail.dat files, correct? Change your
mail format to plain text or HTML and consider dropping Word as the mail
editor.

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Due to
the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.

After furious head-scratching, Tubey asked this group:

I suspect that http://tinyurl.com/4gpbp will take care of it.

I've been using HTML for my formatting. A friend suggested that I select
both HTML and Rich Text. What's irritating is that the friend who offered
the suggestion receives my attachments fine, but most others don't.

I have changed my format to plain text; deselected Word as the e-mail editor;
and, for those recipients who I know are having the problem opening my
attachments, I have deselected Always Send in Rich Text format as part of
their properties in my address book. So far, one of them has replied that it
worked, and they can open and read my attachment.
