My Outlook keeps hanging....

Every time that I try to open mail or compose a new
message, the hourglass keeps turning. Eventually I have
to do a cntrl-alt-del. Once I do that, I get that Outlook
is not responding. I have Outlook 2000. I can do a
preview pane to view new messages, I just can't open them
or respond to them. Any suggestions???
