networked, but unusable

I'm starting a new thread as my previous posts have ceased receiving replies, but maybe itis just hopeless

I really don't understand all this stuff. I never set up any permissions, administrators, groups, users or passwords, and don't even know where to begin. In fact somewhat afraid as I see all the posts from people who set up stuff and are now locked out because something is set wrong. I am just one person trying to network my computers, which no one else is using. Now I find that besides ACCESS problems, I can't even move many other files from one computer to another or change file names remotely or do hardly anything for which I wanted to network them for

(reply)<<When you want to save or modify a file that resides on another computer (over the LAN), you might have a
problem, because that user account that you used to log into the computer you are sitting at means NOTHING to the
operating system on the OTHER comptuer, unless both computers are joined to the domain, AND you used a domain
account to log onto that local computer (as opposed to a 'local' account). By default, if the operating system
on that other computer doesn't know who you are, it will DENY the action you are trying to perform.>

Me again "I didn't get very far. On this XP Pro laptop, I found that the account was already not disabled.
My Aptiva is the main computer I want to access and then I found that in its Win98, there is no "manage" under "My computer" Then I went to my XPhome P4PE I went to the manage and it did not have a user o
group field under tools or anywhere.
So basically I have gotten nowhere.

I do sympathize with the problems you are having. We can dispose of one of
them fairly quickly, I think. When you copy an Access database (or other
files) to a CD, the file is automatically made read-only as you have
discovered. When you then copy the file from the CD to a hard drive, you
will need to open Windows Explorer, find the file and right-click on it.
Then, you should select Properties from the pop-up menu. When the
Properties window opens, look in the lower portion of the window for the
Read-Only property and un-check it.

Unfortunately, there is very little that Access can do for you in resolving
the networking issues you are having. One of the things I would suggest
is getting a book or two on networking at home, perhaps one of these:

Home Networking for Dummies by Kathy Ivens
or
Windows(r) XP Home Networking by Paul Thurrott

both are available via http://www.amazon.com

When I change the status from read-only, and try to access it from the other computer, I find that its read only status has changed back again.

My suspicion is that these problems are related to the setup of your
network. As you indicated in your first posting, you have not set up users,
permissions, etc. I suggest you post a question on this subject to one of
the newsgroups devoted to the versions of Windows that you are using:

microsoft.public.win98.networking

microsoft.public.windowsxp.newusers

microsoft.public.windowsxp.security_admin

I am just getting nowhere.
I bought wireless networking for dummies only to find that it has almost nothing about file sharing other than to recommend buying networking for dummies.

I typed in microsoft.public.win98.networking and it came up "Can't Find the Web Site microsoft.public.win98.networkin
500 Unknown Hos
The site may no longer exist or it may have moved. page not found" , but showed a site: http://www.news2mail.com/microsoft/public/win98/networking.html

Going here I got a message "There is no way to post messages via news2mail.com

It is hard to believe that it should take months to get help to figure out how to send or modify data from one computer to another

This newsgroup is for Access, the database product.

Since you managed to post here using the web interface, you should be able
to find a newsgroup dealing with networking.

If you see a list of newsgroups to the left, click on windows, then
windows9x, windows98, then networking.

I came here because I got nowhere in Networking after posting since last year. It seems that the problem is related to access as I can move other flies.
