New install of office fails to recognize file format.

I installed Office 2003 Pro on a new computer that only had a trial version
of corel on it. After the install, Windows fails to recognize the file
extensions for previously created or new files. I.e. xls, doc. It asks the
user to either use the internet to search for suggestions on which program to
open the document with, or it lets the user pick from a list of available
programs.

Any idea why this is happening. Or how to fix? Not an IT guy so details
will be important.
