"New" Template

Great and Wise Gurus,

Where is the "New Drawing" template (or equivalent settings) in Visio 2000?

Clicking the "New" button brings up a new drawing with page size and units
in those archaic inch things. I've gone into Page Setup and set it to A4
and millimetres, but it doesn't stick - "New" brings up the mediaeval inch
thingies again.

I've set up a new template that I can select, but the New button still
brings up the time-warp inches.

Visio 2002 works fine in this regard, but I've dumped it because of some
retrograde features (aka stuff-ups)

(Muttered aside - can never understand how the only major industrial nation
on earth that persists with those Imperial inch things is the US, which
trash-canned the Empire over 220 years ago. Maybe an American cousin could
explain it to an Aussie friend and ally? )

I don't know about the problem with Visio 2000, but the problem with U.S.
measurements is plain ol' inertia. Industry here has gazillions of dollars
wrapped up in manufacturing processes that use our antiquated measurement
system. Changing the infrastructure that's already in place would cost
gazillions more. You can imagine some resistance is encountered when
legislation is introduced that would encourage modernization. In other
words, it sucks but we're stuck with it.

Page Setup modifies the drawing you are already working on. Try going to
Tools > Options > Regional to change the settings for new documents.
