new user, problem with how to input contacts and later find

i cannot not figure out how to find contacts once they are created. Some are
found by using first names others are found by using last name.

i can generally find using the 'telephone list." but I cannot always find a
name when creating an email and clicking on the "to" button.

have gone to tools/options and enabled the first name and last name options
but this does not help.
