Newbee Needs Some Advice/Help

About a year ago I created a rather simple web site which is being hosted by
my Internet Service Provider. The site is just a series of individual
content pages, each page having a navigation menu bar across the top. This
menu bar allows you to jump to any of the individual pages (page1, page2,
etc).

I wanted to make a few changes to the site so I decided to FTP all the files
down to a folder on my computer. When I opened FrontPage 2002 to make
changes to this folder, I discovered that the top menu bar for each web page
was missing but everything else was correct. In place of the menu bar was
this text line:

"Add this page to the Navigation view to display hyperlinks here"

I've not done any HTML coding in quite some time but I remember when I first
created this web site, the display of the pages in FrontPage was identical
to what I saw on the actual web site.

My question is why is FrontPage not displaying this menu bar, especially
since I've just downloaded all the content?

It's because you used FTP to get the pages. If you want to work on the site
locally, you should open it via HTTP and publish it to your C:\ drive.

In a super simplistic nutshell:

Shared Borders require the server extensions, and server extensions require
that you use the HTTP protocol to move pages around instead of the FTP
protocol.
