I will start by saying that I am totally new to MS Project.
I have a 'live' project and a test one for highlighting the problem that Im
having. I am not getting the problem in my test project so I'm wondering
where I nee to look in my live project to resolve.
Test Project
==========
TASK 1
TASK 1.1 - 1 day
TASK 1.2 - 2 days
TASK 1.3 - 2 days
TASK 2
TASK 2.1 - 2 days
TASK 2.2 - 1 day
TASK 2.3 - 4 days
Task 1.1 must be completed before commencing 1.2
Task 1.2 must be completed before commencing 1.3
Task 2.1 must be completed before commencing 2.2
Task 2.2 must be completed before commencing 2.3
Task 1 and Task 2 can run concurrently but because there is only one
resource available they need to happen consecutively.
I have added myself as a resource with 100% availability
I have linked (by dragging the bar in gantt chart for a preceeding task onto
the next task ie from 1.2 to 1.2) the sub tasks of each of the 'main' tasks.
I haven't linked Task 1 & Task 2 (because they could in theory run
concurrently). What I have ended up with is a project that lasts 7 days
(sum of the durations for the longest task) but what I want to show is that
the project will take 12 days (sum of all the tasks) because there is only a
single resource available.
When I go to resource screen I find that my name is red and there is a
message stating that 'This resource should be levelled based on a day to day
setting'. I level my resources (Tools / Level Resources ...) and on my test
project the tasks shift along so that they are performed consecutively.
Unfortunately, when I try the same thing on my Live project I get the
following message when I try the same thing - "This overallocation cannot be
resolved. "Terry Holland" is assigned at more than the resource's maximum
units to task Business Layer on 03/01/2006 in "2006 Contest v03". Either
reduce this resources assigned units, or increase the resource's Resource
Availability in the Resource Information dialog box....."
Could someone point me in the right direction for solving this
