No sounds

Can you tell me why some e-mails that come in ding the sound and others do
not.
I'm using Outlook 2002 with Exchange 2003, some of the e-mails ding when
they
come in and others don't.

Thanks Craig

Dear Craig,

Thank you for your post!

According to my research, by product design, the Exchange client and
Outlook is hardcoded to wait two minutes between displaying the new mail
notification sound. Thus, you may not be able to get the sound notification
during the two minutes interval. For more information, you may refer to the
following Knowledge Base Article:

XCLN: Mail Notifications Not Received for Each New Message
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=166995

Note: Based on my test, the limitation persists in Outlook 2002.

Due to this feature, after first displaying the new mail notification, it
will not display the notification for two minutes although there are new
e-mails coming. If you want to have the sound notification for all the
incoming messages, we can create a rule to fire the sound notification:

1. Click Tools->Rules and alerts.
2. Click New Rule.
3. Click Start from a blank rule and select Check messages when they
arrive, and then click Next.
4. Choose the proper conditions for messages that you would like to be
notified when they arrive. Do not check any boxes if you want to be
notified of all messages. Click Next.
5. Check the "Play a sound" box, and then click Ok and Next.
6. Add any exceptions if needed, and then click Next.
7. Type the rule name, and then click Finish.
8. Click Ok.

Hope it helps!

Thanks & regards,

Thanks Wen,
I started to follow the steps you gave to me and everything was working
fine, but then it said that no value
was set and it sent me to the My Doc folder? I'm not to sure what to do,
what value does it want?

Dear Craig,

Thanks for the update! Unfortunately, I am not quite sure the exact error

the followings:

1. What is the exact error message? Please send me a screenshot to my

2. When does this issue occur?

Thank you for your patience and I am looking forward to your reply!

Dear Craig,

Thanks for the update!

From the screenshot, I think Outlook is asking you to specify the "People
or distribution list" and the sound file. You can click "People or
distribution list" in the bottom. If you want the rule to apply to all the
incoming messages you can uncheck "From people or distribution list".

After that, you can click Sound to specify the wav file you want to play.
If you prefer the Ding, you can browse to the following file:

C:\WINDOWS\Media\Windows XP Notify.wav

Hope it helps!
