normal.dot missing from templates

We just installed Office 2000 on our Dell laptop and when
we try to launch the programs (Outlook, Word) they freeze
immediately. If I check the task manager, they are not
responding. I called Dell tech support, since this
software was working on our old computer. After several
attempts to fix the problem, we discovered
that "normal.dot" is missing from the templates on our
Office 2000 CD. What could have caused this and what will
this do?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Malley,

Normal.dot does not ship with MS Office. It is built internally by Word when you save and close a file if it cannot locate a copy
using the settings in Tools=>Options=>File Locations.

Be sure that you have everything else shut down when trying to launch one of the Office apps to see if there is a conflict.

Normal.dot is not included on the Office 2000 CD, it is created by Word upon
first use, if it is not already present in the users profile e.g

C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates

Hi, malleyc,

Well...if the software was provided by Dell, they need to continue to
support it, and it may not run on a new computer.

However, the fact that the file normal.dot is missing shouldn't really be a
factor, because normal.dot is the default Word template. If it doesn't
exist, Word will generate a new one.

So...if you did purchase this software off the shelf, did setup run
completely? Were there any errors on the installation? What operating
system are you running?
