Normal.dot question

When word creates a new blank document this is created from the normal.dot is
there a way that this can be changed to be created from a specified template.

The reason for this is i need all new documents to have certain styles and
headers and footers included even on the most basic of documents, which also
have a audit trail.

I can alter the Normal.dot to have these but it has massive implications, it
also means that if the formatting is stored in the normal template if you
delete the normal word will creat its own new blank one so this is not an
option.

is there anyway that the new document template can be specified other than
by default ? If so how.

Thanks in anticipation

I work for a company which has to track all documents and they have to be
security marked depending on the content.

it is not a problem with the corporate documents but people make their own
documents and there is no audit trail with them and it is these that I have
been asked to look at tightning up on.

I could create the normal.dot template to include the relevant code etc to
do this but if someone deletes the normal.dot word recreates a sterile
version again. hence the reason for wanting to try to default to another
template.

I can rebuild word removing all the normal .dot functins for new document
and replace them with my own short cuts and menu items but that will be time
consuming so just wondered if there was another easier way around this.

do you know if there is a way of checking using the wdDialogFileNew if the
user has specified the blank document option and intercepting it there.

Also will this work in word 10 and above as they react differently to word 8
(97).

Thanks for your heelp in this.

Well, you can intercept the File New dialog box with your own code, to
force the use of a template. For more on this, see:

Intercepting events like Save and Print
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/macrosvba/InterceptSavePrint.htm

But, of course, this won't prevent users from creating a document by
(say) double-clicking a template file in Windows Explorer.

You could replace Normal, but see the "Normal.dot versus blank
document template" thread in microsoft.public.word.docmanagement.

I suspect that teaching users is the only long-term solution to the
problem.

Do not try replacing normal.dot with your own file.

You can create a global template that will intercept Ctrl-N, FileNew and
replace the new document icon on the standard toolbar with a macro that
calls up your template. When this is placed in the Word Startup folder the
commands in your template will take effect. You would want an AutoExec macro
in your template to also close the Doc1 that is opened when Word is started
(based on normal.dot) and either have no blank page or have one based on
your template. See http://addbalance.com/word/movetotemplate.htm for
step-by-step instructions on moving / sharing / copying / backing-up
customizations including AutoText, AutoCorrect, keyboard assignments,
toolbars, macros, etc.

This can still be defeated by a knowledgeable user.
