normal template changes every use

Version: 2004 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Processor: Power PC Every time I quit Word 2004 for Mac, a dialogue asks if I want to save changes to the global "normal" template. I have trashed the "normal" document in the "Microsoft User Data" folder in my documents folder, and even emptied the trash, restarted Word, but the problem persists. I know there was an article or blurb about this in MacWorld recently, but I can't relocate it. How do I fix this? PS I have the most recent updates for this product.

There are several things that will update the Normal template every time
Word starts: that's what it's there for, it's Word's scratch-pad for
remembering things.

If I were you, I would simply go to Word>Preferences>Save and turn off
"Prompt to update Normal". Who cares if it updates, it's supposed to :)

This, of course, assumes that you are running an effective anti-malware
program. The prompt to save Normal is a rudimentary antivirus measure,
because one of the things that can cause a save to Normal is a virus :)

Cheers

I also get Word asking me if I want to update the Normal Template every
time I quit, and I have the option mentioned above unchecked in
preferences. Are there any other ideas out there on how to stop this?

I would just live with it. as it give you an option whether you want to save or not. If you don't click cancel (same as no. Okay is same as yes.

2008 despite having this same box whether turned off or not. it automatically saves anyway, whether you want it to or not.

Hi Sara:

If the "Prompt to save Normal" is UN-Checked, then there's something else
happening.

Is it saying something like "Normal is read-only, do you want to save a
copy?"

If you have anything in Normal that "Updates" (such as dates or times in the
header or footer) that will cause a save of Normal template.

So will changes to things such as Default Language or default font.

Hope this helps
