Noteref

Hi,

I am using Word 2003 (Beta software). Under Insert - Reference -
Footnote I have chosen Restart Each Page.

Now, I would like to refer to an earlier footnote in a rather lengthy
document. I use the reference style "See p. 86, footnote 2", and I rely
on the Noteref field in Word (that is, I insert a bookmark on the note
reference on page 86, and then I refer to that bookmark by way of the
Pageref and Noteref fields).

The result, however, is not the expected. I get "See p. 86, footnote
177". Obviously, Word ignores my Footnote settings and counts all the
notes from the start of the document. Is that a bug? Anything I can do
about it? Does it work differently (that is, better) in earlier Word
versions?

Thanks in advance for any response,

Erik

Hi Erik

The bookmark route is not the best solution, as you've discovered. Instead, do Insert > Reference > Cross Reference. In the
Reference Type box, choose Footnote. You'll have to do this twice. The first time, in the Insert Reference To box, choose Page
number. The second time, choose Footnote number.

As far as I remember, this functionality hasn't changed for four or five versions of Word (although it moved from Insert > Cross
Reference to Insert > Reference > Cross Reference).

Hope this helps.
