number of computers allowed for installation

How many computers can I install my new software on? I have 2 desktops and 2
laptops. What if I buy a new computer, can I re-install the software? Or,
is there a way to purchase additional licenses?

Depends entirely on your specific version of Office.
Read the EULA available via Help menu in eg Word.
It might also depend whether this is for commercial use.
A retail version can be moved to a new PC, having uninstalled on the old.
You dont buy extra licences, you buy another Office pkge.
Volume Licensing starts, I believe, from 5

Depends upon what the license agreement says. It should specify how
many computers you're allowed to install on. Yes, you can purchase
additional licenses if you need to.

For Office 2007 Pro (I'm assuming that's what you're asking for) I
believe you're allowed to install it on one desktop computer AND one
portable device *IF* both devices are for the same user. If you have
four users for those 2 desktops and 2 laptops then you would need four
licenses. If it's one or two users then you would need two licenses.

At least that's my interpretation of the license agreement for a Retail
Copy of Office 2007 Pro. You should definitely read it for yourself.

NOTE: I am not your lawyer and this is not legal advice. Just my
educated opinion.

The short answer is "it depends on which office package you have".
However, if you are an adventurous person like me, then you can install
on an extra system to see if you can get away or not with it. I am not
here to lecture you on legality or morality because it is not my
business as you would tell me so. Therefore, install on that extra
system and also try to activate it online [or even by phone if need be]
and the chances are you will get away with it. The system of activation
was started to keep Bill Gates staff busy and to compensate them for
collecting more revenues from customers like you.

I am still using Office 97 but I have nothing to use it for!! What do
you use Office 2007 for which you couldn't do in Office 2003 or Office 2000?

Thanks for response. There are 2 users Mr. & Mrs. I think I would go with
sml bus version. Don't need access. I f I understand you correctly it will
be approx $350 twice? How do I investigate the 5 license package?

I appreciate your response. I will probably go with the sml bus vs pro.
Don't need access. How do I go about purchasing a 4+ license...is it 4
separate packages at $350+ Ouch.

You may find it cheaper to go the Volume License route and buy 5
licenses on Open License (I'm not an Open License Expert) than to buy 4
individual retail copies. Check with your software vendor and see which
they can price out better.

If it's 2 users, each with a desktop and a portable then you'd only need
2 licenses I believe.

Volume licensing is dealt with by either MS direct or an MS authorised
distributor, as far as I'm aware.
ie not from your typical software shop or on line retailer

So you buy 4 * Dell's for $399 and now the software for 4 * $350 :(

Actually quite a few online retailers or consultants can do Volume
License. Might even be able to get it from somebody like PC Connection
or CDW.

I simply meant the typical online store, and since I am in a different
local, I'm unsure of online stores in the country of OP origin
