Numbered List and superscripts

I'm creating a numbered list with main points numbred 1,2,3, etc. Under each
number I'm adding supersripts, a,b,c, etc. Once I get to c under number 1, I
want to start with 2. What's the trick to start wtih 2 insead of d afer 1c?
