Numbering goes CRAZY after insert File

HELP!!!
I have 2 files. Both have lots of numbered lists that work great. However,
when I open the first file and then insert the 2nd file at the end the
numbers in the 2nd file all reset automatically to 1 through 285. So instead
of starting at 1 for each topic the first page starts at 1 and keeps going
through the entire document never resetting..just keeps going and going. I
tried to reformat but its like a house of cards and numbers just go crazy no
matter what I try. Any advice or quick fix would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Numbering is a PITA, and has its own newsgroup. That's where the experts drop
by, when they have time. You'll find some information here

Margaret Aldis
www.syntagma.demon.co.uk

and here

www.shaunakelly.com

that might help you get things straightened out. I think that Margaret's
approach, to set up the numbering with a "false" level 1 to force the restart
of level 2 when needed, is probably going to be the best one.
