Numbering problem using styles

I have defined styles in Word 2000 using Numbering like

1.
2.
3.

Now I have started a new chapter and would like to use the
defined styles but Word will not allow me to use any of
the options available like "restart numbering" or
under "more" the "Beginn" section. What do I have to do so
that I can use numbering together with styles?

Any ideas?
