office 2003 can`t modify the normal.dot

Hi Jacques,

Are you saying that each person has their own Normal.dot or that you're trying to use a shared one?

It's possible that there is a temp file or pointer left open from a failed run on Office and one that appears to be found somewhere
in her available paths/drives even when you use Normal.dot locally and change the settings in Word in Tools=>Options=>File
locations.

If you recycle via her PC all files found using a search string of
~$*.*;*.tmp
(both on her PC and on the network paths) and then start Word do you get the same behavior?

If so, check for any add-ins that may be interfering as well (Terry mentioned the Acrobat one, but there are others).

Also, when she can't modify the 'local copy' of Normal.dot (starting Word after the copy), when she tries to save see what location
Word is using for the saved file. It might not be the local one.

=============
terry,

Yes, there are others on the HDD but ALL USERS here are configured to use
the one on their NETWORK DRIVE and it works for EVERYONE, even the user
having the trouble if she uses another PC. It`s a GPO that controls this. If
you work off the network the GPO doesn`t apply ant the local Normal.dot in
the users profile is used. But that too doesn`t work for this user.

The problem with her PC (and only that PC) is the fact that Word CAN`T
MODIFY the Normal.dot file. If I copy it locally the problem remains the
same.

Hi,

Each user has their own normal.dot in their network home drive and it is
private.

I only have the problem with one user and if that user goes to another
similar PC then it works: changes are being applied to the normal.dot file
when changes are made.
