Office 2003 in IE8 on Windows 7

When I try to open a Word 2003 document inside IE8 on Windows 7, it opens in
a new Word window instead of inside the browser. I don't have this problem
with Word 2003 on IE8 on my XP machine. Is there a fix for this?

Basically, I'm looking for this fix but for Office 2003 instead of Office
2007: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927009/

It's not broke.

Why would you want to open an Office document in IE in the first place?

My job uses a platform that requires this functionality. I'd like to be able
to work on my Windows 7 machine instead of my XP machine.

This was actually a feature prior to Office 2007, so yes, it is "broke."
Which is why Microsoft issued a fix for Office 2007, for those who still
desired to use this feature. Unfortunately, 2007's ribbons weren't designed
for this, so I need 2003 to have a fully functional Word document inside a
browser.

It's a medical transcription company. The platform uses an ActiveX plug-in
in IE to allow transcriptions to create/edit/save/delete MS Word documents
directly on the server through the browser, automatically inserts patient
demographics using electronic medical records, and allows administrators and
physicians to review and print them. It only works if MS Word opens inside
of the browser rather than in its own application.

The company I work for recommends everyone use Windows XP, but XP drivers
for my laptop apparently don't exist currently. Unless I can figure out a
way to get Office 2003 documents to open in IE, I'm stuck using a crippled
Office 2007 without access to the ribbons or setting up a virtual machine
with Windows XP, which would be a bit ridiculous.

Electronic medical records will soon become mandatory industry-wide, so a
lot of transcription platforms are beginning to require this functionality.
I suppose most of them will have to start switching to Office Live soon, as
I'm not sure how long they can force their users to use a decade-old
operating system (especially since newer machines no longer support it).

Thanks for the info! Very interesting.

So was there ever a fix for this? I am in the same boat with my EMR and my
transcriptionist need to be able to have this funtionality.
