Office 2003 Service Pack 2

I have Windows XP Home and Office 2003. I keep everything updated and have
Automatic Updates turned on. Service Pack 2 for Office 2003 has tried 7
times in the last week to install, but fails every time. Why? Obviously
there is a problem with this service pack. Are you listening, Microsoft?

Hi K.W.,

There can be a number of causes. If you go to Start=>Run
and type %temp% look in the folder that comes up for a recent file
with the name of MSInnnn.log and also look for an \ohotfix folder there
and for the recent .log files there and provide more specifics on the
exact error message listed there.

Do you have any other '2003' products listed in Add/Remove Programs?

I have been trying to find a solution to exactly the same problem as KW, and
following your message the following in the log file.

Error 1328. Error applying patch to file C:\Config.Msi\PT1AC.tmp. It has
probably been updated by other means, and can no longer be modified by this
patch. For more information contact your patch vendor. System Error:
-1072807676
=== Logging stopped: 04/10/2005 12:55:43 ===

As I only update office through update it means that microsoft are my vendor
of teh patch, so any idea of a solution?

Sorry to butt in on a thread, but I have tried to up date 12 times
with/without virus scanner/firer wall/spyware/safe mode combinations all to
no avail. and help would be appriciated.

Hi Norman,

It appears that sometimes, if the Local Install Cache (LIS) that
Office 2003 puts in place gets damaged that the MS Installer
can get somewhat confused trying to update the products,
especially if there is more than one 2003 product and if
there are are earlier MS Office products '2000' '2002' 'XP'
still in place.

What are the exact titles of the '2003' series products
you have listed in Add/Remove Programs in the Windows Control Panel?

Were each of the products installed from a retail CD directly?
If not how was each one installed?

Do you have earlier MS Office family products listed in Add/Remove Programs?

Was the update from MS Update
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en
MS Office Update
or http://officeupdate.com (the one you get to through the Office 2003 help menu)

What version of the MSI Installer do you have from\
Start=>Run and type
MSIExec /?

What is the version/build # from Help=>About of each of the
2003 apps?

Try doing a repair install, then try the update again:

Method 1 – Open Word, go to Help – Select Detect and Repair

or use Method 2 -

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click Add or Remove Programs.
3. Click the Office program that you want to repair, and then click Change.
4. In the Maintenance Mode Options dialog box, click Reinstall or Repair,
and then
click Next.
5. In the Reinstall or Repair Office dialog box, click Detect and Repair
errors in my
Office installation, and then click Install.
6. When the repair process is finished, run the update again.

Most likely you will need to have your Office 2003 cd running , will doing
the update
