office 2007 question

Wendy Elizabeth

I would like to be able to run office 2000 and office 2007 on my home pc. I
want my office files that are in office 2000 to stay the way they are for 3
more months due to having wedding plans in office 2000. I do not want those
office 2000 files to be changed for 3 months.

If I put office 2007 on the home pc, will all the files be converted to
office 2007?
I am asking that questions since I just attended an msdn event today and won
a free version of office 2007.

Thanks!

Yes and no. You can only have one version of Outlook on a computer so you'll
have to make a choice there.

You'll have to be very careful installing Office 2007 or you might overwrite
the previous version of Office. They need to go into different folders.

If you do succssfully install Office 2007 it will NOT automatically convert
your older files to the newer format; HOWEVER, if you do something like
double-clicking on a file in Windows Explorer or most shortcuts, the file
will be opened in 2007. 2007 does have a learning curve but it isn't too bad.
To ensure that you open the files in Office 2000, you'll need to either (1)
open up something like Word 2000 then find the file or (2) create shortcuts
that include the path to Work 2000 and also the file in question.

My suggestions: If you are really worried about having problems with the
files or learning 2007, don't install 2007 until after the wedding. There's
also a slight worry that installing Office 2007 might mess up your computer
so make backups of your important files (which you are doing already -
right?).

OR just go ahead and install Office 2007 and don't worry about it. Again it
will not change the file format of the existing files and even if you did by
mistake, you can do a Save As to a previous version if you need to send the
files to friends. And again, make backups of your important files. Often.

Congrats!
