Office 2007 - Vista - Cannot Save to network drive

I

Ian Robert

Hi,

I raised this problem in the vista news-threat but it would seem its related
to office 2007.

Runniing windows Vista Buseiness, on a domain, with sbs2003 server. Cannot
save documents to a network shared drive (mapped) only can drag and drop them
once saved to the desktop.

If one attempts to save to the network drive recieve an error message saying
that the network connection has been lost. The file gets created but is
empty - data cannot be written. The error messages in word and excel are
slightly different but the result is the same. Word says that file data
could not be written.

Has anyone had any issues like this?

Thanks

Ian

Hi Ian,

If the problem only occurs on Office programs, it may be related to Office
programs. I suggest you post to office newsgroup for help.

| Hi Ken,
|
| Sorry for the delay in responding.
|
| If I enter into notepad.exe or mspaint.exe then the files are created ok.
|
| So it would seem to be an MSOffice only issue.

Yes they do. It works fine if they drag and drop from the desktop but from
within the application they cannot save.

Bob I said:

"Drag and drop" isn't the same as the Save. In the folder properties,
security tab, do the users have "Full Control".

Do the users have full control of the storage location?

Emily Lin [MSFT]

Hi Ian,

Thank you for posting here!

My name is Emily and I am happy to be working with you on this issue. From
the problem description of the post you submitted, my understanding is:
- You are unable to save Office 2007 documents to a shared folder.
If I have misunderstood your concern, please let me know.

Recently, we receive the similar issues. The issue may occur under several
situations. The most common causes are:
1. The Temporarily Internet Files location.
2. Antivirus/firewall programs affects the saving process.
3. The add-ins (such as PDF Maker addin, SnagIn addin) in Office 2007
affects the saving process.
4. Other causes.
Let's perform the following steps to narrow down this issue and resolve the
issue. Your patience and cooperation will be appreciated.

Collect information to narrow the issue:
1. What is the exact error message when you try to save files to the
network drive in Office 2007, "document not saved", "file cannot be found",
or others?
2. In Word 2007, try to save a *.doc (not *.docx) to the network drive.
What is the result?
3. Does the issue also occur when you try to save another shared folder on
another computer/server, or it only occurs when saving to shared folders on
a specific server?
4. Run winword /a to come into Word safe mode. Try to save to a file to the
network drive again. What is the result?
5. Come into Windows safe mode with network. Open Word 2007 and save a file
to the network drive. What is the result?
6. Run Procmon.exe to get the process monitor log file.
- Download procmon.exe
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/processmonitor.mspx
- Run procmon.exe
- Stop the current logging by clicking on the magnifying glass button.
- Clear the current log by clicking on the eraser button.
- Start the capturing by clicking on the magnifying glass button.
- Reproduce the issue via one of the repro processes that you have noted
the symptoms from.
- Stop the capturing by clicking on the magnifying glass button.
- Click the File menu > Save to save the file as Issue.pml.
- Zip up and send the resulting log files to me at (e-mail address removed).

Suggestion:

#1
Update all the programs on the computer (Microsoft related programs,
Anti-virus program, Adobe program if you installed it, and etc.)

#2 Temporarily Internet Files
When you work in a file, Microsoft Office saves the file with a temporary
file name and places this file in the same folder as the original file.

Additional, Office 2007 uses Open XML formats and need to modify temporary
files located in whatever folder that is defined for the Temporary Internet
File location in Internet Explorer. Did you change the default Temporary
Internet File location in IE. If there is problem with the Temporary
internet Files, such an issue may also occur. Please check it.
----------------------------
1. In IE, click the Tools menu > Internet Options > in the General tab,
click Settings under 'temporary internet files' > click 'View Files' > are
the 'temporary internet files' saved under the system drive (C:\Documents
and Settings\<UserName>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files)?

If not, click Move Folder to move it to the C: drive. Click OK.

2. In the Internet Options dialog box, Delete Files, Delete Cookies to
empty the Temporary Internet Files. Click OK.

Test the issue again. What is the result?

#3 disable offline files
=============
For Windows Vista:

--Click Start
--Type 'offline files' in the Search dialog on the start menu
--Click the button "Disable Offline Files"

Test the issue again. If it doesn't work, go to next step.

If anything is unclear or if you have any other concerns, please don't
hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Emily Lin,

I

Ian Robert

Hi Emily,

We have removed Antivirus as a temporary test but the result was the same...
so it wasn't the AV.

I don't have access to the machine, user is out of the office. I've asked
them to perform the tasks you want and I'll let you know the results. I
think I get time with the machine at the weekend, so will check then.

As far as I know we are trying to save .doc files in word and it says
"unable to save file - document not saved". or words to that effect.

Regards

Ian

=============

Sincerely,

Emily Lin,

| Hi Emily,
|
| We have removed Antivirus as a temporary test but the result was the
same...
| so it wasn't the AV.
|
| I don't have access to the machine, user is out of the office. I've
asked

|
| As far as I know we are trying to save .doc files in word and it says

I would like to share my experiences on this issue in the hope that they may
help to find a solution. I have been experiencing exactly the same problem to
the extent that it has made working in Office 2007 (on Vista, in my case,
with the shared folders on SBS2003) practically impossible at times and a
huge disapointment after upgrading.

1. The messages I receive are generally "Document not saved" (in Excel 2007)
and "There has been a network or file permission error. The network
connection may be lost" (in Word 2007).

2. I am only using Word and Excel 2003 formats, not .docx and .xlsx.

3. Problem occurs with a shared network drive on SBS2003 - user has full
control of this folder and sub-folders in security settings.

4. Disabled antivirus (Symantec Corporate) on workstation and server - no
effect.

5. Ran Word in safe mode to disable Adobe PDF add-ins - no effect.

6. Disabled offline files - no effect.

7. Whenever the error occurs, a .tmp file is created. Sometimes, by renaming
the .tmp file to .doc, it can be successfully opened in Word or Excel, but
not always.

8. At all times the error occurs, I can save the same document in the same
format on the desktop (or any local location) and then copy and paste it into
the same network location that causes an error in Word or Excel.

9. This problem is not consistent. Sometimes, I can work without a problem
and at other times I cannot save any document that has been changed.

I hope that this helps and I look forward to more troubleshooting next week
after Ian's input.

Robert

Thanks, Bob, yes that sounds exactly the same problem as I am having.

Emily does this give you enough information to progress to a solution?

Regards

Ian

This has to be an SBS issue as I have no problem saving from within
Office 2007 to a shared folder on a Windows 2003 Standard Server
machine from my Vista Ultimate workstation. I can save .xls or .xlsx
and open and work on the files while they reside on the network.

Hi Marc,

Thanks for that. If I use windows XP workstation on the same network,
saving to the SBS server is fine. So I am perplexed.

Hi Ian,

Does the issue only occur when you save to a shared folder on the SBS
server?

In Word 2007, save a file to another shared folder which is on other
client/server instead of the SBS server. What is the result?

Also, temp disable the Windows Firewall in Windows Vista and test the issue
again. What is the result?

If anything is unclear or if you have any other concerns, please don't
hesitate to contact me.

Emily,

When the firewall is disabled, I believe that the same issue occurs. There
isn't another server I can use (there isn't one on the network) - There are
two vista laptops and the problem occurs consistently on both.

Files can be saved locally without an issue.

I think there is a vista network interop problem here, because the vista
machines could not have reliable network connection without turning off
autotuning eg.

netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

But this may have affected office. But enabling it, means the machine
cannot work on the network at all. With autotuning turned off the machines
can login and download profiles and work on the network except with MS Office.

Any assistance you can offer would be gratefully recieved.

Regards

Ian

We are running into the same problem. We run our network on Windows 2003
server and the Vista stations that we have added (including my
workstation) run into this problem of not being able to save. If using
an XP pro with Office 2007, there are no problems saving. The stations
that are Vista with office 2007 have the problem of not being able to
save to a shred directory, but can copy or drag and drop to the
directory. Users have full rights to the shared directories. The
systems are all patched and current. The suggestions for remedies
mentioned did not help.
I hope this helps and I am willing to work with whomever to get through
this.

Ian & Emily,

I am experiencing the same exact problem trying to save documents to a
network share. It doesn't seem to matter what OS the shared folder is
hosted on. I've attempted saving to Win 2000 Server & Pro, Server 2k3
Standard, XP Pro, Vista (Business & Ultimate), and Linux in a domain
environment. I am using domain admin credentials and have ensured
that I have full access permissions (both at the share level and file
level). The error that I get is "Document not saved". AV has been
disabled, offline files are disabled, firewall is disabled, all add-
ons are disabled in Excel and Word. I've tested using Safe Mode and
still get the same error. I can save, modify, delete the documents if
I am on my XP Pro machine (which is running O2k3) and other users here
in the office are not experiencing this issue. Hope this helps point
you in the right direction Emily, as it seems to be something within
O2k7 or Vista that is causing the issue (at least it seems to be).

I think I may have stumbled on to something....
Thank you Ian and Emily.
The order may or may not be part of the solution, but this has worked
on two machines so far. I first ran Ian's suggestion of:

netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

Then Emily suggestion of:

For Windows Vista:

--Click Start
--Type 'offline files' in the Search dialog on the start menu
--Click the button "Disable Offline Files"

Interesting, when I went to turn off "offline Files" it said it was not
enabled, yet the disable button was there. I disabled it anyways.
Rebooted the machine.
And the rest is history. They have worked with no problems so far. I
will update if it changes.

Peace,
Tom

dax_marvel

I have had these same problems too. I am using Vista Utlimate on a
laptop with a network share on a XPSP2 desktop through a home network.

Disabling the Offline Files fixes the problem for me, but I need to use
the offline files as I am often away from home with my laptop and want
access to these files when I am gone.

Please let me know if anyone comes up with a fix decide disabling
offline files.

Hi Ian,

Based on my further research, the webclient service may affects the saving
process in Office 2007 (it doesn't affect other application such as
Notepad). The webclient service is enabled by default. Please disable it to
test the issue.

1. Click Start > type services.msc in the search bar, press Enter.
2. Double click WebClient. Click Stop. In 'Startup type', choose Disable.
3. Try to save Office files to the network drive again. Restart the client
computer to test the issue again. What is the result?
