Office 2007 - Vista - Cannot Save to network drive

Hi Emily

As I indicated in a previous reply, none of the suggestions you or anyone
else have offered in this thread have worked for me.

I would really applreciate any other suggestions you may have. Should I
start a new thread, or is it appropriate to stick with this one?

I have one "solution" for you that may be useful in finding the problem.....
I downloaded procmon with the intention of using it to analyse the saving
problems. Whenever I have problems saving to the shared network drive, I run
procmon from the network drive and when it is running and analysing, I return
to Word or Excel and the document saves just fine! It's hardly convenient,
but I wonder if the authorisation action of the User Account Control (which
kicks in when I try and run procmon) somehow fixes the communication between
Word or Excel and the network share.

Anyway, I am ready to try anything and looking forward to your reply.

Thanks, in advance.

Hi!

On a workstation running Vista Business and Office 2007, connected to a
SBS2003 domain, this problem could be resolved by removing the Add-in
for Files on Microsoft Networks found on
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918996. This also resolved problems
with saving other Office documents on the network share.

Hope this helps someone.

Hi

We are also those troubles with Office not saving to networked drive on
SBS 2003 server. It is extremely frustrating to loose so much work.
This is only happening on our new Vista laptops. We are running Office
2003 and not 2007 so I believe it is a Vista / SBS2003 compatability
issue and not limited to Office 2007.

We have tried all given siggestions to no avail to having fixed the
problem.
Has Microsoft found a way to properly fix this problem yet??

I have a simular problem, though there are some differences.
I have a Windows 2003 enterprise server. It is used as a fileserver.
I have 2 Branch-offices, linked with fiber-connections.

One of the offices has a simular problem as described in this thread.
The difference is that I use Windows Xp machines with Office 2003.
There are 3 types of machines at that branch office: Dell Precision M90
(Laptop), Dell Optiplex GX620(Desktop) and some Dell Servers.

The laptop can create, modify and delete Office documents on the remote
Server.
The servers can also create modify and delete Office Documents on the remote
server.
The desktops however can not. They get a message that the file cannot be
saved, 'cause the disc is full.

After some research I thought it had something to do with SMB signing. The
server was Service Pack 1, so I updated the server (All clients are updated).
But the problem still excists.
I followed this thread with much anticipation, but none of the solutions
mentioned here work for me.

I have just solved this problem on a brand new Acer Travelmate laptop.
Just deactivating offline files solved the issue, but because the user
is in need of this service, I solved it by reinitializing the offline
files cache. I have also deactivated the webclient service, but I did
this before I tried to reinitializing offline files cache. I don't
know if the webclient service has to be deactivated to fix this
problem, but I don't think so.

To reinitialize the Offline Files cache, create the following DWORD
registry
value with a value of 1 and restart the system.

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\CSC\Parameters\FormatDatabase

Hi everyone,

I have followed this discussion with interest. I also have Server 2003 and
Vista on the PC's with Office 2007. The problem I have is that Word,
Publisher and to a leser extent Excel take a long time to open a file or even
worse hang for ages. I tried a change to the registry "enabling cache" which
I found on the ms site but to no avail. One machine has XP and it works fine.
Any suggestions? I would be extremely grateful.

I experienced a similar issue with Windows XP machines running Office
2007. I was unable to save documents to network shares but could save
them locally, then copy them across the network.

We're using BitDefender antivirus, and I tried closing it, which didn't
work, so I closed the following processes:

bdagent.exe
bdss.exe

After closing the the application and ending the above mentioned
processes, I could save Office documents without any issues. I found
that if I lowered the security setting from "Local System Plus" to
"Local System", it still worked ok.

Here's a link to the thread I found the solution in:

I am going to add my 2 cents here....just to give a scope of this
problem because I definately think something has majorly changed with
regard to how Office 2007 handles file security when opening, saving,
deleting files on network shares!!! >=(

First of all, my situation is unique in that I do not give full rights
to this particular network share. The permissions are as follows:

Full Control: Nothing Checked
Traverse Folder / Execute: Allow
List Folder / Read Data: Allow
Read Attributes: Allow
Read Extended Attributes: Allow
Create Files / Write Data: Allow
Create Folders / Append Data: Allow
Write Attributes: Allow
Write Extended Attributes: Allow
Delete: Nothing Checked
Read Permissions: Allow
Change Permissions: Nothing Checked
Take Ownership: Nothing Checked

Based on the above a user should be able to open a file, type stuff in
it, and then save it. They should not be able to delete any files
(and ultimately I don't want them renaming either)....

*** ALL CLIENTS XP PRO SP2 ***

Office 2003: WORKS GREAT! No problems
Office 2007: User cannot modify the file unless they are the owner,
which naturally they are only the owner in the case that they create
the file or "drag and drop" a file from their desktop to the
share.....the error they get if they use the SAVE function in all
other circumstances: "Access Denied, contact your administrator".

Granted, if I change the permission DELETE from "nothing checked" to
"allow" the error does not occur. What does SAVING A FILE have to do
with DELETING? This is an issue with 2007!!!!!!

As far as the solutions offered by Emily here's my thoughts:

Antivirus: make a case for how this should effect saving over the
network? It doesn't, especially when you are talking being able to
save one file type (jpg or txt) but not another (xls or xlsx)
WebClient: not sure what this has to do with it either, but I disabled
and no help (in the case where "delete" permissions are not checked
OfflineFiles: um, no. Offline Files are an extremely critical part to
our network! I cannot disable this, won't even look at it at a work
around =/
Firewall: same question as AV, shouldn't matter if we can save TXT
over network eh? Either way, all LAN firewalls are disabled to
clients through GPO

*** Something else I noticed, when the SAVE fails stupid Office 2007
dumps a TMP file into my network share. IF I RENAME THAT TEMP
EXTENSION TO XLXS I can open it and it contains the SAVED
changes........AAAAARGH WTF?!?!?! ***

That's all I can think of for now, I think I covered everything (note:
did I mention that the users can open 2003 versions and do a SAVE with
2003 offfice, but opening even 2003 version on 2007 and doing SAVE
fails?....so obviously crappy coding on 2007's part)

I have a similar experience with Vista PCs and various versions of
Microsoft Office that cannot save to network drives. I believe that I
have tried all of the suggestions listed in this forum, but rather than
going through them I would like to point a few things out.

1. The only PCs we have seen which exhibit this problem (unable to save
to network drive) are running Windows Vista Ultimate edition. PCs
running Windows XP do not have a problem.

2. Users have all rights to the network share.

3. The only applications we know of which exhibit this problem (unable
to save to network drive) are Microsoft Office applications. The
primary application exhibiting the problem is Microsoft Word, but other
Office apps may have similar issues. Various users at the pcs in
question can save, modify, open, etc. files on the same network drives
if they use other applications.

4. The version of Microsoft Office does not seem to matter (at least
for Office 2003 and Office 2007).

5. At least with Microsoft Word, it has been observed that documents
can be saved to the network in XML and RTF format, but not in Microsoft
Word format (DOC).

6. The error behavior changes depending on Internet Explorer security
settings. With default IE settings of medium to high, Microsoft Word
stops responding if the user tries to save to a network drive. If
\\servername\volume and/or \\IPAddress\volume are added to the IE
trusted zone or if IE security is set to low Microsoft Word doesn't
stop responding but the user is presented with a message that the
target disk is full or unavailable.

7. Changing the status of antivirus, firewall, etc. does not affect the
result.

I hope this information helps. If anyone has any fresh ideas for me
they would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your consideration.

Just letting you all know.

We were experiencing the same issue. Our issue ended up being with our
realtime scanning on our antivirus. Our users were unable to save to
their redirected My Documents (H:\) or any other mapped network share.
Just comes up with H:\document name.docx is not available in this
location. Please check your location blah blah.

Our servers are all Server 2003 Ent. Edition.
Our workstations are XP Pro and Terminal Services with Office 2007 Ent.
Edition.

We're using Computer Associates Etrust ITM antivirus (which totally
sucks!).

I've had to temporarily disable the realtime scanning on the server
that the network share resides on. As soon as I did that they were able
to save normally.

I hope this helps someone.

Actually, I wish we WERE running the CA antivirus product, as its
removal seems to have fixed so many other people's problems.

We are using Trend Micro's excellent product, and even complete removal
via uninstall has no effect on our symptoms or the problem. I'm not sure
why an antivirus product would block DOC files and not RTF or XML,
although I guess it could be worried about macros. If so, why is this
only a problem on Vista PCs, and only with Office documents?

I think a more promising avenue to explore would be the method used to
create a DOC file, and whether there are Vista security settings that
need to be tweaked. For example, it looks like Word creates a temporary
file and then copies or renames it when the document is saved. When the
document is closed the temporary file is supposed to be deleted. It
seems like we are getting our problem at the point that an attempt is
made to rename or delete the temporary file. Network permissions on
Windows operating systems apply to user and group accounts--the
permissions don't apply to the file type or application. It looks to me
like there is something we need to fix with Windows Defender or some
other well-intentioned Vista security feature.

Thanks for the info about CA anti-virus. It was a promising lead but
didn't pan out in our case. We are grateful nonetheless.

I don't know anything about this issue, so I won't be any help, I know. But
have you posted to an appropriate Windows group? Perhaps someone there has
seen the problem and knows how to resolve it.

I'm seeing things elsewhere in this thread about reinitializing the offline
files cache and such,. Have you tried those things?

Thanks for posting - you are experiencing nearly identical problems to myself.

I followed this thread with great interest as our Office 2007 setups are
nearly useless with these issues. Seeing Emily Lin getting involved from
Microsoft gave me encouragement that a solution would be found.

But since Ian Robert's issues were involved, there has been no further input
from Microsoft, which is frustrating to say the least. Surely, not being to
save documents to a network share is a pretty serious usability issue for
such an important (and expensive!) piece of software??

I, like you, have tried all the solutions that helped other posters, but to
no avail.

I really hope this is resolved soon as I am ready to uninstall 2007 and go
back to 2003....

Robert:

Thanks for your reply. I, too would be encouraged to see more interest
from Microsoft. It looks like Emily may have been thrown off the scent
by the CA anti-virus red herring. I guess Microsoft thought the problem
went away. On the other hand, from the number of posts out there maybe
they realize the problem and they are keeping quiet until they have a
solution. We can hope.

We have tried all of the suggestions in this thread, as well as others
from Vista threads. None of the suggestions fixed our problem.

To review, our problem appears only on Vista Ultimate PCs that can't
save Word documents in their native format to network drives. As I said
in an earlier post, we can save RTF and XML formats to a network drive
from Word if we put the server in the IE trusted zone. At least that
way Word doesn't lock up and stop responding. Have you tried saving in
RTF format to your network drive? It isn't a long term solution, but
might be a workaround until someone comes up with something.
