Office 2008 permissions failure to a 2003 server share

I've been fighting this one and I think
I have a work around. I found a web page form
<http://forum.soft32.com/mac/Excel-open-save-files-Firewire-drive-ftopict107272.html>
talking about Excel getting confused when two firewire devices had the
same name. When both devices are online, there's a problem. When one
device is off things work fine.

I'm in the process of migrating servers from an XP box (that's not a
server) to a windows 2003 server. Both boxes have shares of the same
name ('Documents'). The finder works when both shares are mounted, but
Excel throws permission erros. I just tried (successfully) to open an
Excel file after first unmounting (ejecting) one of the shares. Opening
the file worked great. Oh, I did try to open the file with both shares
mounted and got the (now) expected error. After unmounting one of the
shares the file opened just file.
