Don I have installed office 97 pro on numerous Windows XP machines. Run
diskclean----close all running prorams--especially any AV ones and it should
be no trouble

Hi Don. I had the same issue, and this is how I solved it. First, copy
the entire contents of the installation CD to a new folder on the hard
drive. I suggest a seperate partition for it as I did. Then look in that
folder for a subfolder named WIN95. In there you should find the
WMSSET32.DLL file. After confirming that it is there rename the WIN95
folder to WINNT. That's all I did, and the installation went without a
hitch. I have had Office 97 Professional installed in this way on XP for
several months now without any problems. In addition you will have the
advantage of having the installation files instantly available if you
need to add a feature that wasn't installed initially, or (perish the
thought), you need to reinstall Office.

Hope this is helpful.
