'Office' icons on desktop don't work after SP2 installed. why?

I'm experiencing problems accessing any Office product through desktop icons
after installing SP2. SP2 help - didn't help. I get a pop-up stating I "may
not have the appropriate permissions to access the item". Programs open fine
from 'programs' folder. Tried deleting / re-creating icons - still NG.

Anyone experience this problem and knows the fix?
