The templates window displays a number of tabs, all of which can be supressed
via the 'Change' option in 'Add/Remove@ components. However, how does one
remove the 'General' tab (or hide it, or is this not possible. I have added
my own tabs as appropriate?

The General Tab is the root folder setup in Word at tools > options > file
locations > user templates. It cannot be removed.
