Office Pro upgrade problems

Hello.
I have a Dell with lots of disk space and RAM, running
XP. I'm current on all Service Packs and Microsoft
updates.

I tried to install Office PRO 2003 over my previous Office
installation (2000 or XP) and the apps don't work properly.

Word and Excel OPEN, and I can create docs and
spreadsheets, but I can't open OLDER ones. I can't even
open one I just created in 2003. Here are the errors:

Word - the file is not available
Excel - the file cannot be opened because your virus
scanner detected a problem with the file.

I do NOT think I have a virus detection problem preventing
me from opening these.

I de-installed Office then tried re-install - and that
didn't work.

Please help me.

Hi, Jeff. If you are running Norton Antivirus, disable the Office Plugin that comes with it (you will still have antivirus protection when you do this).

One idea for you:
If using Norton go to Options/Miscellaneous/deselect "enable Office plug in"

Thank you. Was able to get Word to work by renaming the Normal.dot file.
