Is there a way to allow the end user to choose where they want office to be

I am installing Office 2007 enterprise, and would like to have setup not
asking the user for the serial number and their name. Is there a custom
install feature that allows the user to choose what and where they want to
install it? John

If you mean "product key" instead of "serial number", no. You have to enter
that in manually.

Assuming you have an enterprise license you can do at least part of what you
are looking to do.

Copy your CD to an installation point on a server. From that point run
setup.exe /admin. This will being up the Office Customization Tool. From
there you can step though all the options and set them as you like. You CAN
set you enterprise key and makes some basic choices on what UI shows up
during install. Once done save the MSP file the tool creates to the Updates
folder within your installation point.

Now, at the workstation, when you run setup from you installation point it
will look to the update folder for you MSP file and apply the customization
including the install key and install the software.

Clearly you've never done an install in an enterprise envoirnment.

Oh come on now. This is completely wrong information. What has happened to
the MVPs around here. This used to be the go to place for questions like
this but lately the knowledge here is lacking at best.

Assuming the OP has an enterprisze license he certianly can apply the
provided Key automaticly by using the Office Customization Tool.

JoAnn. Do this with your extra time. Multiply the "short" time it takes to
watch the install run by say 25, 50, 100, 200 computers and then tell me if
you have that sort of time on your hands to sit in front of every PC and
twiddle you thumbs as you watch the little blue bar go by. I'd rather take
that time and watch a few TV shows or go out to lunch/dinner.

The OP (which I am not) doesn't actually say that but there are a few key
words/phrases that were used that makes it sound like he's not just
installing one.

In his first post he used the phrase End User. Well I don't know about you
but I don't often refer to myself as an end user when I'm just installing
software to my personal PC. But everyone on my network is always referred
to as an end user.

Then in his second post he uses the term enterprise, again a term not
commonly used when discussing the installation of just one PC, and he states
he doesn't want the "user(s)" to enter the Key. These thing indicate to me
at least installation in a larger environment then just one PC.

Lastly, unless you intend to install the software more then once it wouldn't
even make since to ask the original question so its reasonable to assume
he's planning a larger deployment.

Oh and one other note: If I found any one of my IT guys/gals sitting in
front of a PC with a book in hand I'd fire them. There is way too many
things to be doing in a corporate environment to be wasting time reading a
book while baby sitting an install. I fear that Microsoft has lost sight
if this with the changes to Office 2007 deployment especially for those of
us who can't/won't afford software like SMS or the hardware to support it.
The attitude that a small office IT person has the time to read a book while
doing an install is unbelievable to me yet the changes in deployment almost
make this scenario a reality. The truth is the IT guy in the small office
actually has less time to futz around because he/she doesn't have a staff to
delegate work to when things get busy.

I refer to myself as an end user, both at home and in the office. I've seen
people with Enterprise licenses because they bought into their company's
Home Use policy.

And you're right, an IT staff member shouldn't be reading while however I
would think they would have posted this question in a newsgroup that dealt
with servers and the like. I could very well be wrong on this point tho.

As far as I know this is the only group that deals with Office setup. I
would think that this is the location to ask questions about any setup issue
both individual and enterprise. If there are other groups please suggest
them because its painfully obvious from many of the post here including my
own that most MVPs here know very little about corporate deployment.

Bob Buckland ?:-\)

JoAnn,

FWIW, this group, microsoft.public.office.setup, is the one intended for Office setup questions for both individual users and
deployments. There is also a broader desktop deployment group microsoft.public.deployment.desktop, but that's often for a combined
product (Office as part of a deployment) discussion.

It's one of the reasons a couple of the folks from MS on the setup support side, like Eric have been hanging out here <g>.

I have 2 laptops and 2 servers at home, on for printing and the other for
downloading. Ok, can I use the OCT to Input the "product key" and the User
Name. Even though the OCT asks for a destination directory how do I get the
setup to ask where to install it? John
