Office Updates

I recently spent an hour trying to upgrade Office 2000 using the automatic scan for necessary updates and the automatic download and installation. I tried various permutations four or five times. Each time the upgrade "failed" for unspecified reasons. It was recommended that I apply a "full administrative upgrade" instead, which I tried. That failed on account of the upgrade had already been applied. This effort was started after the latest MBSA recommended that I check a box to protect against malicious Word macros. The box does not exist in my installation. I find the entire exercise unsatisfying. Maybe I should uninstall Office 2000 and then apply patches at a known starting point. What do youse guys recommend?

See my post below, I can't even reinstall 2000, I get a message "this patch
could not be opened". This is after running the setup program on the CD.
I'm afraid to remove my Word and Excel and attempt a reinstall at this
point. If I remove and can't install, I'm out of luck unless I want to
spend major bucks on Office 2003 just to get programs back that I need.
Ones I have already paid for and work just fine for for me. I DON'T need
Word or Excel 2003!

Hi, bob,

There's a published fix for the "patch package" error:

OFF: Err Msg: This Patch Package Could Not Be Opened ...:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;295823

Please note that one of the articles it refers to (KB238413) does not have
updated information about when the utility can be used. It has recently
been updated to work with Windows Installer version 2.x.

Hope that helps.

So, from what I can tell, uninstall office with this utility and then
reinstall office 2000?

Yes, sort of. The utility doesn't uninstall Office; it only removes the
Windows Installer data related to Office. You should then re-install Office
to the same location it was in before, which should recreate the appropriate
Windows Installer data.

The utility got me past the patch error and I was able to install sp1 and
sp2. That got me to where I was in the beginning, only up to sp1 even
though I ran sp2 update. Sp3 won't install, Get a msg, "the update can not
be applied", thats all is says.

Okay, if you were using the Office Update site before, try downloading and
installing the update from here:
..........................................................
Office 2000 SP-3 Client Update
To download and install Office 2000 SP-3 Client Update only, follow these
steps:
1.. Using your Web browser, locate the following Microsoft Web site:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/office2000/SP/3/WIN98MeXP/EN-US/o2ksp3.exe

2.. Click Save to save the O2ksp3.exe file to the selected folder.
3.. In Windows Explorer, double-click o2ksp3.exe.
4.. If you are prompted to install the update, click Yes.
5.. Click Yes to accept the License Agreement.
6.. Insert your Office 2000 CD-ROM when you are prompted to do so, and
then click OK.
7.. When you receive a message that indicates the installation was
successful, click OK.
Note After you install Office 2000 SP-3, you cannot remove it. To return to
an installation before Office 2000 SP-3, you must remove all Office 2000,
and then install it again from the original CD-ROM.

Are you ever prompted for the original CD during installation?

If that doesn't work, go to the OHotfix folder in your temp folder (in my
case, it's C:\Documents and Settings\<myusername>\Local
Settings\Temp\OHotfix) and look at the latest log file. See if you can find
in that log file where it may be failing.
