Office XP Activation

R

Ronnie

I heard, in passing, some time ago in a UK Open University Confence (chat
room), that the the Office XP Student/Teacher edition could be installed on 3
machines, (2 x desktop and 1x laptop I think) so I did, after checking the
EULA, which said 'Yes' and it activated on all 3 machines no problem.

Due to MS Windows XP (Home) failing on my laptop, I've just reinstalled
everything I've got that I still want. Office XP will not now activate over
the net, and the MS person I was led to on the phone informed me that the
EULA is strictly for one machine, and she could not work out why I was
allowed three installations before. The three machine option is available for
Office 2003 Student/Teacher edition only, she said.

The re-installed Office on my laptop has an EULA clearly stating one machine
only.
This is not what I read before - but stupidly I failed to print out what I
read previously. Curiously the other two machines do not show a EULA at all.
(They have not been 'Office Updated' recently - and I now have no
inclination to do so.)

4 queries:
1 - Have i made a mistake by completely 'Office Updating' the new install
before actually trying to use it?
2 - Is there a file I can restore from my recent whole system backup to go
back to my previous licenced state? (I don't want to actually do a whole
system restore)
3 - Is MS trying to force me to upgrade by retrospectively altering the EULA
via Office Update?
4 - Is this a problem due to the laptop being on XP Home and the other two
on XP Pro? (Not likely IMHO)

I have redundant licences for:
Win95 (x3)
Win98 (not SE) (x2)
WinXP Pro (x1)
Office 95 (x1)

and current licences for WinXP Pro x2, Home x1.

I'm a home user, a student and in a house full of students/teachers, so I'm
a bit annoyed, and not inclined to send any more money.

Any information on this would be very appreciated.

Hi Ronnie,

Did you perhaps have an Office 2003 trial edition on that PC at some point? The more than one machine license change for the
Student Teachers Edition was introduced with Office 2003. Office 2003 would only run on the Windows XP edition (doesn't matter if
it's home or pro) you listed below. Office XP would install on Win98 and higher.

You didn't make a mistake. Office STE XP was a one installation only. 2003
was the first to open it up to 3.

Thank you JoAnn,
I can understand this if I searched on-line and read the wrong EULA, but I'm
certain that I read it within the program, and the 3 activations (several
months apart) went without a hitch. I suppose I'd beter get my credit card
out again.

Ronnie.

Thank you Bob,

I never had a trial of 2003 (as far as I can remember!), my edition was
purchased fairly early after the XP S/T edition was released.

Thanks for your help.

Ronnie.

How do I buy an additional licence for my software? I can't find out on the
web-site!

Thanks

You don't buy an additional license for STE, you just buy another box set.
Your local office supply store, Wal-Mart, Target, etc carry it. So does
amazon.com if you prefer online.

Thank you JoAnn,

I seem to have now successfully installed the trial version of Office 2003.
This will rescue me for the time being. I will either buy it, or migrate to
OpenOffice.

Thanks for your help.

<shaking my head> That trial version is such a sore subject with me.
Inevitably it will expire when you need it most.

<Chuckle!> Absolutely! The date is engraved in my mind............ I like
the new 'Outlook' GUI, this could be the most expensive mail client ever!
Isn't it sad when the mail handler is your 'killer app'.............
