Office XP and Win98se

I have installed Office XP on a Win98se machine and
something is causing my DSL modem not to work. Is there a
way I can find what file is causing the problem for my
modem?

I am at a total loss here. I've tried everything and got
things installed once without having to shut the machine
down. Things worked but when I re-boot and the system
settings are being updated it causes my modem to come up
with a question mark in the device manager. I've tried re-
installing the modem after the Office install and that
doesn't work.
