office XP on dead pc

i originally installed office xp pro on a desktop pc
which subsequently died. i went to reinstall office xp
pro in my new laptop but when i entered the key i got a
message saying that the software was already in use in
another pc (presumably my dead desktop). i cannot
uninstall office xp pro from my dead pc, so how do i
solve or circumvent the problem when installing on the
new laptop.

Did the software come with the system? (OEM) If yes, the software lives and
dies with the system on which it came preinstalled. It cannot be
transferred to another computer under any circumstances.
