Office XP winword hangs up after service pack updates

I have just updated my Office XP and am now having problems with winword.exe
hanging up at 99%. This happens when I start Outlook and I am using Word as
my email editor. When I kill the process, Outlook functions fine so long as I
edit in HTML.
This was not happening before I did the Office update and loaded service
pack 3 and a couple of other required updates. I have always used Word as my
email editior without issues until now.
I have tried doing the Office repair and reintsall and nothing changed...
Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this problem?
