I am a beginner with some of this computer stuff and I need some help. I am
currently taking some computer classes at a local technical college to obtain
an Associates Degree.I was wondering if somebody could explain this to me. I
need to know why the Office XP software package will not operate on a PC that
was purchased in 1995. The user has a 486 system with 8 MB of memory that
runs the Windows 95 operating system.

Because that system is "too old" even if it does still work. Office XP came
out about 7 yrs after that computer was made. And I have 8MB of RAM in my 4
year old Handspring (same as Palm Pilot - even THAT is out of date these
days.)

Microsoft Office XP does NOT support the Microsoft Windows 95 operating system. The versions of Microsoft
Windows supported is stated under "System Requirements" on the Microsoft Office XP retail box. Nowhere does it
say "Microsoft Windows 95".

The last version of Microsoft Office to support the Microsoft Windows 95 operating system was Microsoft Office
2000.

In other words, you will need to purchase an earlier version of Microsoft Office in order to install it on
Microsoft Windows 95.
