one question about OneNote cache

My OneNote book is created in my USB disk. As for as I know, when I
attach a file in ON, it should insert into the .one file in my USB
disk and also store into the cache folder in the computer.
Then I make a test, I delete this file from the cache folder, and I
assume I could open it again from my ON. But, I'm wrong, the file icon
in ON have no response when I double-clicked it.

Could anybody give me some explanations? Or I have to wait much longer
time to expect there would have new cache file create? That's weird.

Deleting embedded files from the cache folder is not supported. If you
delete embedded files from the cache, OneNote will be unable to open
those files on that computer. To fix that, you'd need to delete the
entire cache and let OneNote re-create it.
