Onenote 2007 Search

C

cytexone

Hello Everyone,

I have Onenote 2007 installed with the Beta version 3 of the Windows
Desktop Search. I uninstalled WDS to downgrade to 2 in hopes of
getting desktop search and hopefully having onenote 2007 search as
well. I learned that it couldn't be done so instead I uninstalled 2
and went back to 3.0. It seemed to install fine, but for the life of
me for days now I cannot get onenote search to work. The only thing
Search will do is find text on the page you are on.

I really don't want to go back to 2003 if I don't have to because 2007
is so much nicer, but I can't function without search.

I've tried unistalling and reinstalling wds 3.0 beta a few times with
no luck.

Thanks for your help

Hi Dan,

You need to give WDS3 some time to index OneNote. Have you already left
OneNote open for an entire night?

I haven't but I will this evening. Is there a command to initiate a
build of the index?

Dan

It should do it on its own. You can check in Control Panel, Indexing
Options if it has indexed anything. If it doesn't seem to have done
anything click Advanced and then rebuild there.

Patrick,
I was looking at the tabs in "Indexing Options" and figured it must be the
WDS3.0 I installed a while back. There was a long list of file types and a
toggled choice for the way WDS would try to index each type.

I tried clicking what looks like a link, "How does indexing affact
searches?" The program pauses, and re-appears without having offered an
answer to the question. Later I was informed that the WDS program had "an
incident" and offered a chance to send MS a report.

The front panel of the Indexing Options program says, "4,559 items indexed.
Index is up to date". This is a very new laptop so the low number of files is
probably right.

How else could I know if it is working properly?

If search works in ON, then you can tell that indexing is working
properly.

Unfortunately there is no better way,

Hi Patrick,

I have the same problem in ON 2007.

If there is an instance of 'searched word' on the page that is open, it will
find that, but then just spins forever, until I cancel it.

I went to Control Panel / Indexing Options. It says: "Waiting for status
options..."

Nothing shows in the box below. The "Advanced" button is not clickable.

I've left OneNote open for 48 hours.

Don't know if it's related, but WDS doesn't work for me in Outlook 2007
either.

Any suggestions you have would be most appreciated.

Thanks!

Remove WDS3, reboot and reinstall it. That seems to be the only way to
get around this issue.

My system is still not working, I have just went into the indexing
control panel and told it to rebuild index. Hopefully that will help
but I really doubt it.

Can someone from microsoft chime in here and offer some assistance?

Thanks

Give it some time to index. If that doesn't help, remove and reinstall
WDS3.

WDS3 is currently a hit or miss. Either it works for you or it doesn't.

Hi all...

I have triend everything and faced the same search problems with WDS
for ONENOTE 2007. Now I noticed that if I don't Install WDS 3 at all,
and then if I start Onenote 2007... it will tell u to download WDS...
but all you do is say No or remind later and try searching... and it
works perfectly !

It seems WDS has a Bug for sure since One note 2007 Seraches perfectly
without WDS being installed.

Do let me know if this helped any of you !

Only if you can tell me that note flags work without WDS. I tend to
believe the lead programmer when he advises to use WDS because otherwise
you lose a lot of functionality.

Patrick,

I've done this now three times, the last time it indext 48+ thousand files,
and the search seems to work in Outlook. The time before it indexed 50,851
files and seemed to stop indexing, although it said it was indexing (after
several hours it said this). Previously, it seemed not have loaded properly
at all, such that Advanced, etc., couldn't be accessed.

Do I just keep taking whole days to let it work? Is there a setting that
..one files that aren't defaults? Why does it matter if OneNote is open while
its indexing if the .one files are on the list and in the location of files
it's looking for? Do I just keep repeating this?

It's pretty frustrating. I rely on flags and on searches, and I show that
first when I show it to interested friends.

Is there a more recent beta that I haven't downloaded? I think I downloaded
straight from the website. Anything more recent?

Oh no. Can this be true?
Why don't you just index the directory where the OnNote and Outllok
PST files are stitting?

files and seemed to stop indexing, although it said it was indexing (after

at all, such that Advanced, etc., couldn't be accessed.
It's a pretty buggy beta version.
Do I just keep taking whole days to let it work? Is there a setting that
.one files that aren't defaults? Why does it matter if OneNote is open while
its indexing if the .one files are on the list and in the location of files

It is not actually indexing .one files. Rather, WDS 3 is just a search
engine that is loaded and used by OneNote and Outlook. So OneNote is
triggering the indexing for its content and that can't happen when
OneNote is closed.
It's pretty frustrating. I rely on flags and on searches, and I show that
first when I show it to interested friends.
Frustration is unfortunately part of the deal of using beta products.
Is there a more recent beta that I haven't downloaded? I think I downloaded

Nope. No one knows when a new beta of WDS3 or ON 2007 will be available.

Thanks for getting back to me Patrick. I still have a couple of questions:

1. I don't actually understand which is indexing, ON or WDS. You said it's
a search engine, and that indexing is triggered by ON being open, but I still
don't understand which program is doing the indexing, ON or WDS. Rainald
Taesler suggests setting the WDS to just trigger indexing of ON & OL. Can
that be done since there is no UI so search any other programs?

2. If it looks like it's indexing, says it's indexing, saying it's indexing
several tens of thousands of files, but doesn't index ON, do I just start
over each time uninstalling, restarting, installing and having it take hours
to index?

3. Is there a faster way of determining if it will end up indexing ON than
waiting for it to have indexed tens of thousands of files before discovering
that ON didn't get indexed?

Thanks!

P

Patrick Schmid

1. ON uses WDS for indexing. It's really just an engine meaning ON runs
WDS is. So the actual indexing is done by WDS. The only way to have it
index ON or OL is to open the respective program.
2. You can try reindexing: Control Panel, Indexing Options, Advanced,
Rebuild. I think once it actually did it, it keeps on working.
3. Nope.

No clue what you were trying to say.

Just to make clear, WDS3 does currently NOT index .one files. It indexes
the OneNote storage directly when OneNote is open. It does not actually
index the files.
