Onenote and EverNote

A while back, in response to a question I had about
some features I was hoping OneNote had, somebody
mentioned that EverNote (www.evernote.com) had the
features I was looking for. So, I went to the EverNote
web site and took a look.

I am very impressed by what I found. They use a different
metaphor than OneNote. Instead of a virtual notebook they
use a virtual endless tape. You can put notes on the tape
and add categories to a note so that you can just see
the notes that show what you want to see. There are all
kinds of ways you can use categories and subcategories
to simulate OneNote's notebook.

What's great about EverNote is that the basic version,
the one without handwriting and shape recognition, is
free!

Don't get me wrong - OneNote has some nice features, but
it still quite young. Too often someone's request for features
results in the answer that the feature is coming in Office 12.
That's nice but it doesn't help today. When Office 12 comes
out then I'll make another comparison but by then I suspect
that EverNote will also have many more new features. Plus,
unless you need handwriting and shape recognition, the fact
that EverNote is free will be hard to beat. Check it out!

Cordially,
Jon Forrest
