When I open a 2nd word doc. (One being already open), it always opens in the
same window. I want it to open in a new window, just as CTRL-N will open a
2nd browser. How can I do this ? I use Win98

Thanx.

If you have Word 2002, click on Tools | Options | View | check the
"Windows in Taskbar" box | OK. If you have Word 2000, it should already
be doing what you want unless you changed it with an add-in. If you
have Word 97, I don't think it's possible.

I'm aware of two ways with Office 97:

#1. From the Windows "Start" menu, use the cascaded menu to open Word.
Once Word is running, use "File >> Open" to open an Word file. Repeat
these steps for the second file.

#2. Point to an Word file on the desktop or in a folder. With the right
mouse button, click "Send To >> Word". Repeat the steps for the second
file.

For #2, you might not see "Word" in the "Send To" menu at first. To add it
there, put a shortcut to the Word program into the folder
C:\Windows\SendTo\

Word 97 didn't yes have that feature. Back then, the only way to get
two docs open in separate Word apps was to literally open two
instances of Word and open the docs separate in each. Otherwise, Ctrl
+ N opened a second doc within the same interface.

However, you can then click Windows + Tile or Cascade to allow for
easier viewing of the two files.

Viewing in cascade in the same winow would not be desireable. The objective
is to have multiple windows open in order to copy and paste rapidly from one
doc to the other using ALT-TAB. The posting by Jay in this thread it what I
was looking for.
Thanks

If you don't mind using multiple instances of Word then you can also
modify the file association to make this a little easier.

- Open an Exploring window
- Go to Tools/Folder Options
- Select the File Types tab
- Locate the file type for Microsoft Word Documents
- Edit the file type and turn off "Browse in same window"

Note if you use File/Open in Word then you will open the document in
the same instance. This option only applies to documents you open
outside of Word such as double-clicking them in an Exploring window
such as My Computer or your Desktop.
