DISCLAIMER: Microsoft doesn't recommend this strategy. Neither do I. IT
MAY BREAK STUFF. It may stop any MAPI enabled programs from working if
installed. It may cause problems that are just plain weird. Although,
Corel WP8 insists on installing this anyway, so...
Make backups of your .pst. Use the backup to test. Do NOT use original
..pst files, as this method will shrink them. This method can be used to
retrieve all email and attachments (beware that OE may block
attachments!) and possibly Outlook Notes (not sure.)
It doesn't merge/import the contact list of Outlook.
Look, in my case, only Mail items and, if possible, Notes were valuable
to me. As I understand the search requests, the big issue is reading
the .pst file at all, and some requests to import to OE. Since OE
doesn't have calendar or contacts (in the sense that the .pst stores
the contacts in its own proprietary format), I'm just assuming the
emails are desiring transfer.
HOW?
Get the Windows Messaging Update for Windows 95
http://support.microsoft.com:80/support/kb/articles/Q177/8/54.ASP&NoWebContent=1.
*I'd strongly suggest backing up any mapi*.* files first, as this
reverts them to Exchange 4.0 versions.* I don't know if this runs on
Win XP or Win 2000 (probably not, I haven't tried, nor do I want to,
and don't recommend it)
Running the update, install Internet Mail, but not MS Mail (it'll save
some hassle). Point the .pst to the BACKUP of your original .pst file.
You should see the list of folders and emails. You can view them from
here, if you want, or you can import them into OE, as you desire.
I'm only providing this as an example because I couldn't figure out how
to do this without installing Outlook 2K again on a reinstalled Windows
98 machine. I just know it worked for me. I had a .pst on Outlook 2000,
installed a fresh Windows 98, got the Mapi error for Outlook Express
trying to import the messages, remembered the Windows Messaging,
downloaded it, and installed it. It recovered the majority of what I
needed (emails) into Outlook Express. I hope it helps someone else, but
I don't really know if it will. But I hope I can find this again in a
Google search
