Open project files in read-only by default?

Kyle

Currently when I open a project file from the project server it defaults to
read/write view. We're responsible people so this isn't a huge issue but,
for peace of mind, I feel it would be very helpful if I can change the
default to "Read-Only" when opening files. I've scoured the program but
haven't found this option, does it exist?

Thanks!

File menu / save as / in the dialog box click the "tools" dropdown menu at
the top right corner.
Choose "general options", check the box for "read-only recommended".
That should set it for read-only unless the user chooses otherwise. You can
enter a password if you like, but that may be overkill.

Jack, does that hold true with the Server Edition? I wouldn't think it
would, as the project file is saved differently in the Server
environment than in the stand-alone environment.

I do not know and can't check it since I don't have project server
installed, but since opening the file is done entirely by Project there
shouldn't be any reason why this feature wouldn't work unless they have
developed a different way of doing it.
Try it out and let me know.

Yes, sorry for not being clear on this. The plans I want to view in
read-only by default are project-server plans. There is one person in charge
of doing the edits but I am allowed to view them at any time. I was told to
be absolutely sure to always manually check "Read-only to view" before
opening a project however if it's possible to set that button to read-only
automagically, I'd be thrilled. :)

I don't see the tools pulldown unless I click the "save as file..." button
within the "Save As" dialog. This sounds like it would work though, if it
were possible to save a project on _on the server_ in read only preferred
mode. From what I can tell though this option is only available when saving
the project to a file.

Kyle --

There is no way to control the default Read/Write or Read-Only state of
projects in Microsoft Project Professional. If there are others in your
organization who need Read-Only access to projects in the system, your
Project Server administrator needs to change the security settings in
Project Server. He/she should refer to the following link for an idea how
to accomplish this:

Hope this helps.

This looks promising, I'll pass it on! Thanks!
