Open Pub 2002 File with Pub 2003?

Publisher 2003 opens standard Publisher 2002 files - but
fails when trying to open a Publisher 2002 file with
merged data from Excel 2002 (also now upgraded to Excel
2003). The Excel file will open independently with the
upgraded 2003 version. Any thoughts on how to open
the "old" Publisher file that has merge fields?

Suggest you move the either the Publisher file or Excel file so when you
open the Publisher file, it cannot find the Excel file link.

This issue you describe is unknown, and there could be some possible file
corruption.

Once you have tried the above, if the Publisher file open, then try
re-linking the Excel data.
Often you will need to export the data from Excel to CSV to keep Publisher
happy.

Always post the version of Windows as well as Publisher you are using.

You may also need your MDAC Components updating:

Well there are 2.8 MDAC Components there for XP, so would install them.

Have you re-booted and defragged since you upgraded from Office 2002 to
Office 2003?

Have you checked to see your TEMP folder is empty including any sub-folders
deleted?

How many Kb is this Publisher file?

Do you have that garbage Norton Anti-Virus software installed? If you do,
REMOVE/UNinstall as quickly as you can and then re-boot and your problems
will be over.

Thank you for the help - I don't use Norton Anti-Virus,
so that wasn't a problem. I followed your advice and
emptied the TEMP folder and defragged (I only use 25% of
my disk space, but it still took FOREVER). I did not
download the MDAC. I re-booted again after the defrag
and miraculously was able to open the publisher file
(minus the excel target file for the merge).
Again - Thank-you! Thank you! Thank you! Many hours
designing several publisher documents have been salvaged!

Well, you know where to come next time for help.

Make sure you have a backup of your work, as corruption and hardware
problems can happen at any time.

You should Defrag at least once a fortnight.

You are always better to do a SAVE AS of your Excel file/data you want to
merge into Publisher as CSV (Comma Separated Value) Publisher is much
happier with benign data.
