Open Word document in Internet Explorer as Read Only?

Is there a way to open Word documents using Internet Explorer, but not allowing users to change the document? I would like to set the document as read only, but don't want to change the file property to read only before opening the file. If the user opens the file using Word, they could edit it, but if they open the file using Internet Explorer, they can not edit it

Is this possible

Assuming that you want people to open the document from a web page, hosted on a web server, the document would always open as read only ie:. internet explorer downloads the file to the temporary internet files folder on your hard-drive and if you make any changes, they are made to this file and not the server copy. The only way they could edit your file is if they knew the UNC path to the file ie:. the servername and folder where the file is stored, could they edit the file. Also, if the file is on a hosted page, set the permissions on the file to allow only certain people modify rights. This will prevent them from saving the file.
