Opening document through MS Word v.s from source location

When opening a MS Word docunment from w/in Word, the document appears to be corrupted. But when opening the same document from the its source location the document appears fine. Why is this happening? How can this be resolved? And how can this be avoided in the future?

In Word's File Open dialog, change the "Files of type" setting from "Recover Text from Any File" to "All Word Documents." For more, see http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/RecoverText.htm
